Switchback Railway
Switchback Railway was the first roller coaster ride made for amusement at Coney Island in America. LaMarcus Adna Thompson designed it in 1881. it was constructed in 1884. it seems that LaMarcus designed this coaster on the idea of Mauch Chunk Switch Back Railway that was a coal carrier in the coal mining work. It had started carrying passengers for amusement in 1827.
This amusement was worth 5 cents that people would pay to climb a box shaped carrier that
would take them from one tower to 600 ft down towards another tower. This carrier went 6 miles per hour. At the summit of the other tower the carrier was switched back to return. Thus, it was named “switch back”.
Thompson designed many developed types of coasters across the country for amusement those were known as “The L.A. Thompson Scenic Railway.” Most of the coasters made before 1930’s were shattered. Few of these rides were used until 1954.
Most of the old coasters were broken down and converted into the newer developed ones. The modern roller coasters are made by taking ideas from the old ones known as Woodies. The new ones are called Hybrids that are safer and more comfortable and a lot more developed off course. The voyage and thunderhead are becoming very famous just as Thompson’s “Switch backrailway”.
