The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) confirmed one person has been placed under custody related to the incident at Thomas S. Wootton High School, a top-performing school in one of the wealthiest counties in the country.
"MCPD dispatched at 2:15 p.m., for the preliminary report of shots fired near Thomas S. Wootton High School," MCPD said.
The campus, located in a suburb northeast of Washington, D.C., remains under lockdown as additional officials respond to the scene.
Parents are advised to go to a nearby campus at Robert Frost Middle School, located at 9201 Scott Drive, which has been designated as the meeting location.
MCPD indicated that the authorities are currently coordinating school dismissal.
Students who ride the bus will be released directly from the school once the scene is deemed safe, while parents picking up their children are advised to wait for further instructions.
"All students who ride a bus will take their regular routes home. Parents of bus riders are asked not to come to the school," MCPD said.
"Reunification for non-bus riders will be shared shortly."
