Beneath its shimmering surface, Los Angeles holds eerie mysteries from its storied past to today.
Los Angeles, often pictured in a golden light, has a long history tied to mysterious and spine-chilling stories that intrigue both locals and visitors. But just how true are these ghostly tales?
Explore three notorious spots in Hollywood for a glimpse into the city's haunted history.
The Cecil Hotel
The Cecil's notoriety includes housing two infamous serial killers. Austrian murderer Jack Unterweger and American serial killer Richard Ramirez, known as the Night Stalker, both stayed here during their killing sprees in the early '90s and mid '80s respectively.
The mysterious death of Canadian tourist Elisa Lam at The Cecil remains one of its most haunting tales. After vanishing for two weeks, Lam was discovered in a water tank atop the hotel. Bizarre elevator footage captured her last known movements, leading to widespread speculation about her mental state and the circumstances surrounding her accidental drowning. Noted psychic Jack Rourke later brought to light new insights about her final days during an investigation for a Hollywood documentary.
The Hollymont House
Since 1976, 6221 Hollymont Drive has been a hotspot for supernatural occurrences. Former owner Don Jolly and his housekeeper reported ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena, which were even witnessed by renowned parapsychologist Dr. Barry E. Taff.
Returning over two decades later with advanced paranormal investigation tools, Dr. Taff discovered geological faults beneath the house. This revelation supported theories that natural forces, rather than supernatural entities, were at play. Psychic Jack Rourke has suggested that what many perceive as hauntings could actually be interactions between human consciousness and these environmental anomalies.
The Roosevelt Hotel
The Roosevelt Hotel is famous not only for its celebrity guests but also for its enduring paranormal activities. Reports of spectral children, a pianist in vintage attire, and ghostly swimmers have only added to its allure.
Particularly captivating is the tale of Marilyn Monroe's mirror. Placed in the hotel during her frequent visits and rediscovered after her death, it reportedly shows reflections of Monroe primping as she did in life. Actor Montgomery Clift, another spectral resident, is said to cause disturbances in his preferred room, with reports of moving objects and unexpected shoves.
A fourth grader went on a school trip when someone found a message in a bottle containing a letter that was written by her mom 26 years ago. The message was tossed into the Great Lakes.
